Demolition of Steel portal frame sheds

Project Details

Daltons Demolitions were appointed by BHC Ltd to undertake the demolition and site clearance of three steel portal-framed warehouse buildings on behalf of Davidson Bros (Shotts) Ltd.

The existing facility comprised approximately 2,700m² of steel-framed industrial accommodation, with the structures extending to approximately 7 metres in height. The works were undertaken to clear the site in preparation for the construction of a new warehouse facility.

As the surrounding warehouse and operational areas remained live throughout the project, careful planning, coordination and sequencing were essential. Daltons worked closely with the client’s representatives and site health and safety team to manage vehicle and plant movements, maintain safe segregation between demolition activities and ongoing operations, and minimise disruption to the wider facility.

The steel portal-framed buildings were progressively dismantled using a controlled demolition sequence, working systematically through each structure while maintaining the stability of the remaining sections. Structural steelwork was processed on site using specialist demolition attachments and hydraulic shears, reducing the material into manageable sections suitable for removal and recycling.

Following removal of the superstructures, the concrete floor slabs, foundations and associated hardstanding were broken out and processed in preparation for crushing and recycling. Materials arising from the demolition works were carefully segregated throughout the project to maximise recovery and recycling rates while minimising the volume of waste requiring off-site disposal.

The works were successfully completed safely, ahead of programme and within budget, with no reportable incidents.
